Return to Spotlight on Books
Jim Trelease will return to Minnesota for the 20th Annual Spotlight on Books Conference on Friday, April 11, 2008. Join us for a day of activities with an afternoon workshop, "Making Books into Friends Not Enemies", and concluding with an after-dinner presentation: "What Teachers and Librarians can Learn from Oprah, Barnes and Noble, and the Grocery Store." Book sales, signing, and a banquet will complete this special appearance on Friday.

Jim Trelease has been winning awards, writing books, and making presentations about children's reading for more than 20 years. At the Spotlight Conference, he will address librarians, teachers, parents, and the general public on the oldest, cheapest, and most successful method of instilling a desire to read in children: reading aloud!

While these programs are about children's reading, their content is aimed at an adult audience. Citing dozens of titles and demonstrating the simple techniques involved in reading aloud, Trelease traces the need for this from the cradle to adolescence.

Trelease also addresses common concerns of parents such as reading in bed, comic books, commercial phonics programs, sports-obsessed fathers, and television -- including heartening examples of families that have excelled when the TV viewing is controlled.

Jim's most popular book, The Read-Aloud Handbook, has spent 17 weeks on the New York Times national bestseller list and is now in its 6th American edition. Together with British, Austalian, Chinese, Spanish, and Japanese editions, there are nearly 2 million copies in print!
